Almost every interior painting question turns out to be a question about the wall rather than about the paint. Whether one wall can be patched, whether a ceiling stain can be covered, why the same crack reopens each year, why mould returns to the same corner — paint is the last step in all of those and rarely the step that decides the outcome.

The ten questions that come up most

Roughly in the order they arrive in the conversation.

Short answers

How often. No interval applies to every room, and any number you are given is a guess about your household. Exposure sets it: a south-facing living room behind a glazed wall fades years before a north-facing bedroom, a family hallway wears at hand height, and a kitchen ages through cooking rather than light.

One wall or the whole room. A single wall can be repainted, and it will rarely be invisible unless it is done corner to corner from one batch. A patch in the middle of a wall shows as a difference in sheen under raking light even when the colour is exact. Repairs go to the nearest corner or edge.

The tin you kept. Better than nothing, not a guarantee. Part-used paint settles, the wall has already shifted with light and cleaning, and a new tin of the same reference can come from a different batch.

The brown ceiling stain. Nobody should put emulsion straight over it. Water staining bleeds back through, sometimes within days. It needs a stain-blocking primer, and before that the ceiling has to be dry through its thickness rather than dry to the touch.

Recurring mould. A decorating symptom and a building problem. A painter can wash it, treat it and apply a fungicidal coating, which suppresses growth without touching the cause. Mould returning to the same corner each winter is usually condensation on a cold line — an uninsulated concrete column or beam behind the plaster, or a bathroom with no working ventilation.

Peeling in the bathroom. Generally a finish never intended for a wet room, an unsealed surface, or moisture arriving from behind. Peeling in sheets points at adhesion; blistering over damp plaster points at water.

The crack that reopens. Cracking along a straight line, usually where a concrete frame meets block infill, is movement, and filler alone will always reopen because filler cannot stretch. Taping the joint or using a movement-tolerant filler absorbs it.

Emergency painting. Painting is rarely the urgent part. The burst pipe, the failed balcony membrane or the leak from the flat above is. Stop the water, dry the fabric, decorate last.

Sequencing. Painting goes near the end, after every trade that makes dust or drills walls, and after new plaster has dried and been sealed.

How much is paint. Less than most people assume. This is labour-heavy work, which is why the gap between two quotes is nearly always preparation, access and coats rather than product.

Where the answer depends

The surface

Cypriot interiors are typically rendered blockwork or concrete carrying a thin skim, and what sits on that skim decides most of the work. A chalking emulsion has to be sealed first or the new coat lifts it as it dries. Textured coatings and old distemper are a removal job rather than a painting one. Two coats over a prepared and sealed substrate is the standard specification; going from a deep colour to a pale one, assume more.

The building

A ground-floor house and a third-floor flat with a shared stairwell are the same square metres and not the same job. Nicosia's older suburbs carry a large stock of blocks built between the 1970s and the 1990s, where ceilings have been overpainted many times and the stairwell needs a tower. Before work starts in a block, settle who protects the lift and stairs, what hours the building allows, and whether anything being painted is common property rather than yours.

Where you are on the island

Location changes the failure mode more than the technique. Near the coast — the seafront strip in Kato Paphos is the clearest case — salt-laden air reaches interior surfaces through open balcony doors, which favours washable finishes and better sealing. Around Oroklini the salt lake keeps humidity high, so condensation appears earlier on cold surfaces. Inland Nicosia has the widest temperature range on the island, and that swing shows as hairline cracking along frame-to-block junctions rather than as damp.

The season

Nothing about the calendar stops interior work, but it moves the programme. Paint skins over fast in a hot unshaded room, which is why crews start early in July and August. In an unheated flat in January it inverts: recoat times stretch and ventilation, not warmth, limits how many coats go on in a day. The weeks before Christmas and Easter and the end-of-tenancy turnover in early summer are the hardest times to book a good crew at short notice.

What nobody asks but should

Is the wall dry, and how do you know? After any leak, "it looks fine now" is not an answer. A moisture reading settles it in minutes and costs nothing beside redoing the ceiling. This is the most common reason a repair fails within a year.

Has the cause been fixed? Decorating is the last stage of a water repair. If the balcony membrane, the shower seal or the pipework upstairs is still failing, the paint is a countdown rather than a repair.

What finish is on the wall now? Matt emulsion cannot be scrubbed without polishing the surface, which is why cleaned marks in a hallway show as shiny patches. Choose a washable finish for high-traffic areas and record that you did.

Who owns the surface? In an apartment block the inside face of your walls is yours; stairwells, landings, external walls and shared balcony soffits usually are not. Painting common parts on your own initiative can start an argument that costs more than the paint.

What is the plan for touch-ups? Ask for a labelled part-tin of each colour and record the product, code and finish inside a cupboard door as well as on the tin. Ranges get reformulated, and a scuff in year three is a five-minute job with the right tin and a repainted wall without it.

Common questions

Can a painter fix the cracks, or do I need a builder?

Hairline cracking from movement is a decorator's job: rake it out, tape or fill with a flexible system, then paint. Cracks that are widening, running diagonally from the corners of openings, or arriving with doors that no longer close are a structural question and should be looked at before anything covers them.

Is it worth repainting before selling or letting a property?

It is one of the cheaper things you can do to a property because it is largely labour, and an empty property paints faster than an occupied one. Fix what causes visible damage first, because a fresh coat over an unresolved defect is visible again after the first winter.

Can I paint over mould with an anti-mould paint?

You can, and it helps at the surface. A fungicidal coating suppresses growth on the paint film; it does not warm a cold wall or ventilate a bathroom. Treat it as buying time while the ventilation, insulation or leak is dealt with.

How long should a repair be left before it is painted?

Long enough for the material underneath to dry all the way through, which depends on what it is, how thick it is and how humid the room is. New plaster and fresh filler both need a sealing or mist coat first.

Does painting qualify for the reduced VAT rate?

Renovation and repair of a private residence in use for more than three years can be invoiced at the reduced rate of 5% instead of the standard 19%, provided the value of the materials does not exceed 50% of the value of the services. Painting is labour-heavy so it typically meets that condition, but the conditions are set by the Tax Department and are worth confirming before you rely on them when comparing quotes.
